What is a hackathon?

Hackathon is an event where small teams of software developers design, assemble and demo a software project within a very short timeframe.

Why should I care?

Nice attitude.  If you're a software developer, you should care because hackathons help you hone your skills, expose you to new dev patterns and tools, and let you demonstrate your capability -- and potentially win prizes.

If you're a business that relies on new ideas, you should care because hackathons are an excellent way to spark innovation within your development teams, generate product ideas, improve team morale and identify talent.

What does it cost to use Hackatopia?

$1,000,000. Just kidding. Nothing for hackathon participants or organizers

Free, but you're going to sell my profile data, right?

No. Not now or ever. Please review our Privacy Policy. It's a work in progress and if you think it's missing something that would make you feel warm and fuzzy, contact us..

How do I create or join a team?

Creating a team is simple. It all starts with an Event. While viewing the details of an event that is being managed within Hackatopia, click the "Join/Create a Team" button in the registration panel in the right-hand column.  This button is available prior to the registration deadline and when clicked will take you to a page listing all of the teams that have been created for the selected event.

If any of the teams are accepting new members, you will see a "Join Team" button beneath that team's details.  Clicking the "Join Team" button will begin the process of submitting a membership request to that team's captain.

If you would rather form a new team, it's as easy as entering a name and description in the "Create a Team" form in the right-hand column of this page.

How can people join my team?

Edit you team profile page to accept new members. This will enable the join team button. Clicking the "Join Team" button will begin the process of submitting a membership request to you.

How do I organize a hackathon?

Organizing a hackathon can be as simple or complex as you make it.  It can just be a group of friends hanging out and coding, or it can be an elaborate event with many teams, sponsors, prizes and publicity.  It's really up to you.

Can I organize a great hackathon without using Hackatopia?

Definitely. Hackathons have been going on for most of recorded history (Ok, we can't know that for certain, but we do know they have been around forever). Most hackathons use some combination of spreadsheets, wikis, blogs, and discussion boards to manage signups, prizes, schedules and judges. This makes it easy lose track of information and harder to share details with participants.

Hackatopia provides a full-event-life-cycle management platform for the organizers, as well as a set of tools for developers to manage and profile their Hackathon contest activity. Lastly, it also provides the integration across events and participants, creating an ecosystem in this space.

Can I just list my event, but not manage teams and signups with you?

Of course! But doing this will prevent the developers in your contest from adding your event to their profile pages, and you'll miss out on a bunch of great tools and features.

Can you organize my hackathon for me?

Yes. Although we try to offer the tools you need to do it on your own, we know that in some cases it just feels better having someone else do it. Contact our team for information on the options available.
